WJHS D.C. Trip 2012 PDF Print E-mail

We had an overwhelming response to our DC trip and reached our cap of 42 in one week! We have had many parents express a desire to send their child, but were unable to get registered in time. If you want to send your student to D.C. in June 2012 here is your chance. We will be starting a wait list through Worldstrides. When that wait list reaches 20 students, those students will be added to our trip, allowing us to take 2 buses. DO NOT WAIT to register because we will not take more than 63 students. A deposit is required to hold your spot but is refundable if we do not reach our goal. You can contact Worldstrides at 1-800-468-5899 and use trip ID #66863.

ELP Quiz Bowl Coming Up! PDF Print E-mail

It’s May, time for the Soaring High Quiz Bowl; a competition for Extended Learning Program (ELP) students (3rd-5th & 6th-8th grade). The competition originated in the 90’s and rotates among schools hosting the event each year, with Washington as host this year! The 3rd-5th graders competed Wednesday, April 20th and placed as follows: 3rd grade – 3rd place, 4th grade – 2nd place, 5th grade – 3rd place, and Washington 3rd place overall! Great Job to Mrs. Sieren and those students! The 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Quiz Bowl teams will compete Wednesday, May 4th at the high school starting at 9:15.

The Quiz Bowl consists of 3 rounds where teams of 6 students accumulate points while competing against 5 other schools. Rounds consist of questions from 5 topics (this year's include Grant Wood, Herbert Hoover, BP oil spill, Bubblegum, & Big10 conference), resource questions (answers in dictionary, 2011 World Almanac, world maps, phone book & the Des Moines Register newspaper) and Brain Teasers. Students have been researching, studying and practicing for the Quiz Bowl for about a month.

Awards are presented to 1st-3rd place schools for each grade level and for overall school. This is a FUN DAY for the students (and a chance to show off their hard work)! Renee Sieren is the ELP teacher for the 3rd-6th graders & Erin Thorius is the teacher for the 7th and 8th graders. We will post results of the 6th-8th grade competition so check back later!
