ELP Quiz Bowl Coming Up! PDF Print E-mail

It’s May, time for the Soaring High Quiz Bowl; a competition for Extended Learning Program (ELP) students (3rd-5th & 6th-8th grade).  The competition originated in the 90’s and rotates among schools hosting the event each year. This year, 3rd-5th graders compete May 10th (Monday) at Lone Tree. May 14th (Friday), 6th-8th graders compete at West Liberty.

The Quiz Bowl consists of 3 rounds where teams of 6 students accumulate points while competing against 6-7 other schools.  Rounds consist of questions from 5 topics (this year's include Iowa Tourist Attractions, author Roald Dahl, Earthquakes, Winter Olympics & History of Mathematics), resource questions (answers in dictionary, 2010 World Almanac, world maps, phone book & the Des Moines Register newspaper) and Brain Teasers.  Students begin researching, studying and practicing for the Quiz Bowl about a month before the big day.

Awards are presented for 1st & 2nd place schools for each grade level; as well as, for overall school winner. This is a FUN DAY for the students (and a chance to show off their hard work)! Renee Sieren is the ELP teacher for the 3rd-6th graders & Erin Suter is the teacher for the 7th and 8th graders.  GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

Gateway to Technology at WJHS PDF Print E-mail

Washington Jr High school will be implementing a new program in the curriculum in the 2010-2011 school year, Gateway to Technology.  GTT is a middle school program offered to help students explore math, science, and technology.  This activity-oriented program challenges and engages the natural curiosity of middle school students and is taught in conjunction with a rigorous academic curriculum.  GTT will be taught next year at the eighth grade level, working with design and modeling projects.  Students will be using solid modeling software to be introduced to the design process.  This class is designed to be a stepping stone to Project Lead the Way classes offered at Washington High School.
