Stewart First Graders Move and Groove with Pick a Better Snack PDF Print E-mail

First graders at Stewart have been taking more healthy bites these past two weeks through the Pick a Better Snack program. This sweet week the focus was on exercise and broccoli.

This program is designed to motivate children to eat more fruits and vegetables and to be more physically active. Each week Amy Green, 4-H/youth coordinator, visits the first grade classrooms to talk about making healthy food choices. They always get to sample a particular fruit or vegetable of the day.

If you have any questions about the Pick a Better Snack program or would like to volunteer or financially support the program, please call the Washington County Extension Office at 319-653-4811.

Students learned at Pick a Better Snack that 60 minutes of exercise is required each day for healthy bodies. Tara Luers’ first grade students at Stewart Elementary put in a little exercise time in the classroom by dancing the Interlude.

Stewart: Learning about Dollars & Cents PDF Print E-mail

Recently, second grade students at Lincoln Elementary learned different forms of dollar and cent notations. Pictured here are students from Amy Allen's classroom practicing dollar notation with the dollar symbol & decimal point. Students were encouraged to write on the ELMO if they felt comfortable to write the dollar notation of the amount written. They were able to see multiple ways to write dollar & cent amounts.

Stewart: Thank you Volunteers! PDF Print E-mail

We are lucky to have many great volunteers within our school district. Pictured here is Amy Statler who visits Stewart Elementary every Tuesday morning to volunteer 45 minutes to help in Mr. Kolin Ross's classroom. They do fun things like flash card practice, telling time, counting money and work on reading. Pictured with Amy are students doing math facts: Landyn (left), Makayla (middle) & Colby (right). Thank you to Amy and ALL THE GREAT VOLUNTEERS that we have within the entire Washington School District!
