Eyes On The Graduation Prize! Print

At WJHS, the 8th grade Read 180 class studied a unit called Eyes On The Graduation Prize, which focuses on the importance of graduating from high school. The class learned that millions of high school students across the country have dropped out of school without earning a diploma and how this significantly limits their options and compromises their future. We discussed what the "prize" is that each person receives for graduating from high school. In one of our readings, two students shared how they overcame their limitations and became success stories as they pursued their goals. Another story discussed three friends that were surrounded by the pitfalls of city life; however, they made a pact to go to medical school and against all odds, they accomplished their goal. We even had the opportunity to have three of our foreign exchange students share their education requirements and what each of their goals are. As a class, the 8th grade students shared their short and long-term education and career goals. The students then established a class pact using motivational words and phrases to encourage all students to "Stay In School".
