Today the Governor announced that all schools in Iowa will remain closed through the end of the school year to help prevent the further spread of COVID-19.
Seniors, I want to apologize to you directly. I know that this year is supposed to be the best year for you with spring activities, prom, and graduation. Some of those things have been taken away, and I feel sorrow for you missing out on those opportunities. We will be trying to come up with some type of replacement opportunity on how we can still offer these to you, but it will not be the same no matter what we plan. We do want to hold these events for our students, so we will be sending out a survey to our senior class to gather their input.
This announcement will continue to impact all Washington Community School District programming, including all athletic and extracurricular practices and competitions, and all weekend events.
This decision has caused a great deal of concern and disappointment for our students, staff, and families. The pandemic arrived quickly, and when we first were directed to close our school buildings in March, we did not realize it would be the last time we would see our students in person this school year. Please know that we share in your disappointment.
Per our district calendar, the last day of school for students is Wednesday, May 27. We will continue with virtual learning until that date, just as we have over the past several weeks. We encourage all families to keep their students engaged in these activities to ensure learning continues to take place through the end of the school year. Our staff is ready to assist all families in these efforts, as well.
We will continue to offer the required coursework at the HS level. HS students and parents, please make sure that you continue to work with your teachers. We have created a schedule that we feel will maximize student learning while at the same time, not overloading students with expectations. Every student across Iowa is in the same situation as you.
For our PK-8th students, I want to make sure families understand not to get stressed over being thrust into a home school position. I do not want you to feel overwhelmed with work being sent by the teacher. Please remember this is not required so if you are getting frustrated, please take a step back - You have my permission (not that you need it). The work is designed to ensure students are staying connected with the school and the materials being covered in each of their classrooms. We know in the bigger scheme of life, this might not be a priority for families. We want you to take care of yourself and your family. Like I said before, we will work our tails off to get ALL kids caught up when we get them back to school.
We will continue school lunch services through the extended school closure, as well. Currently, we are delivering meals on Mondays and Wednesdays. These deliveries ensure meals for each school day through May 27 when our USDA funding will run out.
Once again, thank you for your patience, understanding, and flexibility during this unprecedented time. We will get through this together. Please continue to stay safe, practice social distancing, and keep our community in your thoughts and prayers. It is going to take a while for our families and communities to get back to normal, so please continue to lean on each other. If you have questions, please feel free to email me at [email protected] or call (319) 653-6543.
Sincerely,
Willie Stone, Superintendent
